Eric Holder’s ‘furious’ folly

Congress has a constitutional responsibility to exercise oversight over the Executive Branch, and for more than a year we’ve been attempting to fulfill that with respect to the Justice Department’s “Fast and Furious” scandal.

Yet Justice — despite repeated requests for documents, multiple appearances before various committees and more than ample time — has failed to answer fundamental questions about this ill-conceived, ill-executed firearms operation.

Gowdy: Obama will fire Holder if Fast and Furious threatens his re-election ‘quicker than you can say Marc Rich’

South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy, one of the most outspoken Congressional critics of the Operation Fast and Furious scandal, said Thursday that he thinks President Barack Obama may end up firing Attorney General Eric Holder before the election.

“Oh, I think the thing that drives 99.9 percent of all elected officials is very easy to put your finger on,” Gowdy said in an interview with NRA News’ Ginny Simone. “It starts with a ‘re’ and ends with ‘election.’”

WASHINGTON — The GOP-controlled House has made clear that it’s unhappy with how long the Justice Department is taking to hand over documents regarding a U.S. gun-tracking operation in Mexico.
Republican Newcomers Split From Old Guard

It was supposed to be a budget- cutting frenzy. House Republicans lined up to offer a series of amendments whacking away at a $51 billion spending bill that funds the Departments of Commerce and Justice, and scores of other agencies.

One by one their proposals died, often at the hands of long-time Republican lawmakers joining forces with Democrats. By yesterday afternoon, only two budget-cutting amendments had been adopted, carving about $1.5 million from the bill.

GOP hits Holder on 'Fast and Furious,' pushes ban on Justice lying to Congress

House Republicans on Wednesday presented an amendment to a Department of Justice spending bill that would prevent Justice from using taxpayer funds to lie to Congress.

The bill, which is likely to pass, was presented by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and supported by several other Republicans who are outraged over a February 2011 letter from the department that denied any involvement in a gun-walking program. That program allowed guns to enter Mexico and fall into the hands of drug cartel members.
GOP leaders go slow on Eric Holder contempt vote

Hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt? Not so fast, says House Republican leadership.

Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California have decided to slow Rep. Darrell Issa’s drive to hold the attorney general in contempt over the controversial Fast and Furious program, a move that could infuriate conservatives who have been calling for Holder’s resignation.

Gowdy Releases Statement on American Community Survey Amendment

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment by Rep. Ted Poe (TX-2) to remove funding from H.R. 5326 for the enforcement of the American Community Survey. The legislation originally contained language that would make failure to comply with the survey a criminal offense, with the potential of prison.

“Judge Poe hits the nail on the head with this amendment. If citizens want to tell you how often they lose concentration or how many flush toilets are in their home, that's up to them. Frankly, I think it's none of the government's business.” Rep. Gowdy said.

He added, “To threaten prosecution for the failure to answer these questions is outrageous. The purpose of the census is to apportion the congressional seats. Accordingly, asking about the number of household members of voting age and the race of the household members for purposes of constitutional compliance are the only two questions the government needs the answer to.”

Rep. Trey Gowdy is the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Health Care, District of Columbia, Census, and the National Archives. On March 6, 2012 Rep. Gowdy held a hearing entitled The Pros and Cons of Making the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey Voluntary. Rep. Gowdy is also a co-sponsor of the Poe Amendment on the American Community Survey.
