House Passes Presidential Protection Act
Rep. Gowdy said, "The Presidential Protection act authorizes Secret Service protection to Presidents for life. Presidents elected after January 1, 1997 are currently only authorized to receive Secret Service protection for ten years after leaving office, and the increased mobility and youth of still-living former Presidents, coupled with the national security threat posed to post 9/11 leaders who were instrumental in the war on terror, necessitates protection for life, as has been the case since the 1960's."
H.R. 6620 will create a uniform standard of protection for former presidents. The Presidential Protection Act will now be voted on in the Senate.
