Committee To Host Field Hearing on Local Education and Job-Training Initiatives

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, August 16 at 1:00 p.m. EST, members of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce will gather in Greenville, South Carolina for a field hearing entitled “Reviving our Economy: The Role of Higher Education in Job Growth and Development.” Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) will host the field hearing, which will take place at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR).

Chairman John Kline (R-MN) said, “A quality higher education system and a strong workforce are vital to America’s success in an increasingly competitive global economy. As we work to improve higher education and encourage lasting economic growth, I am pleased Reps. Foxx and Gowdy will be meeting with community leaders to learn about local solutions to education and workforce needs.”

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) said, “In higher education, as is in most cases, local communities usually know best.  This hearing will help us learn from the successes of local business leaders and educators who have created innovative partnerships to meet the job training needs of their community and to stay on the cutting edge in technologically advanced industries.”

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) said, “This is an exciting time for the Upstate of South Carolina.  The partnership between our educational institutions and the business community has been a tremendous boost to our local economy.  I am grateful Chairman Kline and Rep. Foxx chose to showcase our community in such an appropriate forum for this important issue.”

The field hearing will feature two panel discussions. The first panel will examine the local economy and job opportunities, while the second panel will focus on the ability of higher education institutions to successfully prepare graduates to join the workforce.
